Prepare for flooding

Floods can happen quickly, so don't wait until it's too late - get prepared now.

Here are some things you can do to prepare before it starts raining.

• Check the long term flood risk for an area in England - GOV.UK
• Check if there are current flood risks in place for your property 
• The Environment Agency is launching a new flood warning service this Autumn 2025. Watch this space for more information as it is released.
• Check your insurance coverage
• Consider flood protection equipment for your home
• Know how to turn off your utilities in your home
• Contact your Parish Council to find out if your community has a flood group
• Create a flood plan
• Find out about local flood groups

Floods can be caused by heavy rainfall so you can be vulnerable even if you don’t live by a river or waterway. It is never possible to  completely flood-proof a property, but there are lots of things you can do to reduce the damage flooding can cause. • Never put yourself in any danger
• If you are at immediate risk of flooding, call 999 and ask for the fire service. 
• Move pets and valuable items upstairs or to a place of safety.
