Prepare for strong winds

When strong winds are forecast there are steps you can take to keep yourself, your home and your neighbours safe.

Don't risk injury to others or damage to your property - secure loose items outside your home and in your garden such as ladders, toys, garden furniture, trampolines or play equipment. Ensure bins and plant pots are not in exposed areas. Secure garden furniture or move it inside or into your garage. Secure trampolines with tent pegs or turn them upside down and ensure shed doors are locked.

Check the weather forecasts - Visit forecasts, or download the Met Office Weather Forecast app where you can create alerts for your area. Pay particular attention to any National Severe Weather Warnings covering your area, and act on any advice issued.

Who provides your power? Make sure you know who your power provider is and how to contact them if you have a power outage. Read advice on preparing for power cuts.

Charge mobile phones -  keep mobile power banks fully charged and any back-up batteries for medical equipment in case there is a power cut.

Limit travel as much as you can. If you need to make a journey, allow extra time and check for the latest advice from your travel operator ahead of time, and adhere to ‘Do Not Travel’ notices.
